That type of thing does my head in.

I suppose that people who do this are somehow immune to the (oft mentioned) respect or feelings of awe and/or inspiration that sites induce in (normal) people....Sadly profit is more powerful than the need to keep our heritage, not only alive but visible.

Well, if it is scheduled then that damage is a criminal act and EH should be told and if it isn't scheduled there is now a 70% chance it is part of a Defra scheme and the farmer is being paid to ensure such damage doesn't take place so English Nature should be told.

Personally I think it would be good if EN were even told about instances of gross dumping of litter etc. I don't think their details specify farmers must ensure against that but since they are handing out zillions of our money for archaeological stewardship I don't see why they shouldn't be asked to toughen up. Paid stewards ought to keep places tidy, yes?

It's in Wales, so EH won't be applicable. I reported it to RCAHMW, who confirmed it's not scheduled. I will be contacting CPAT next (at RCAHMW's suggestion).

Ah yes Wales, sorry. So the equivalents in my spiel are Cadw and Tir Gofal.

Although Wikipedia says "Until recently the prevailing agri-environment scheme in Wales was Tir Gofal..... It was recently announced that this scheme has ceased, with a bridging payment scheme until its replacement is launched."

Might still be worth mentioning to them. I bet they've stopped inspecting places now it's a bridging payment scheme so won't be aware of what goes on.

Needless to say, there is an inevitable complication.

The barrow is in a field crossed by a public footpath, but isn't on the footpath (or quite visible from it, due to a rise in the intervening ground). Making an issue of this may simply encourage the farmer to fence off the path from the rest of the field, meaning that no-one will know what he's doing (or isn't doing) to the barrow. Strictly I shouldn't even have been to see the barrow without the landowner's permission. I've been wrestling with this since emailing RCAHMW yesterday, but I'm not sure that there is a right or a wrong answer here.

Situations like this make me even more envious of Scotland's enlightened access laws. :-)

Still I remember when Corrstone was a rubbish tip until somebody and his pals went and cleaned up the mess. About a dozen skips did the job and the farmer let us do it as well. And as you saw he keeps the place pretty tidily now. Sometimes direct action works a treat.

And a lovely lovely site it is to.

We're back up in April by the way.

Nigel, my old walking in the rain pal, hang on, hang on. I've been away on projects and home responsibilities a long time, and am horrified to come back and read your last last paragraph. What's this about the Megameet?

Loie and I have plane tickets, reservations, high hopes and great anticipations for seeing all of you this summer. We were under the impression the date was set last year, hoping to avoiding the crowds and complications expected of the Games and the Immanentization of the Eschaton, if anyone now remembers?

Please tell me that we haven't made a mistake! I won't, here and now, talk about our expected dates, just in case there might be a secret I'm supposed to keep, but please, please tell me our now chiseled in stone itinerary is not in vain, and that we can expect to see you and all our TMA friends on the date supposedly agreed on last year.

I was so expecting to have dozens of people standing me scrumpies in the Red Lion. While it teemed rain ourside.

Or, if things aren't working out the way we thought, I suppose I could just demand all you squabbling children show up on our date and buy me scrumpy anyhow. Otherwise, you just wait until your Father gets home. That's all I'm going to say. You Just Wait!

Yours truly,
Your Mother Goddess in Unrecognizable Disguise (Having, if nothing else, at least still The Hair)
