It's all circles !
Aug 13, 2011, 11:31
There's a new crop circle formation, just been reported, if someone wants to give Julian a nudge. Last night, probably, though no report whether it's 'genuine' or man-made yet. 'Off the A40, near Yatesbury'. That's all there is!

Genuine? Aren't they all man-made?

A very few have been videoed forming by themselves but it is usually artifice not nature

Hmmm...natural? Didn't know that...how reliable are these videos. Don't know much about them...

"how reliable are these videos" - not reliable at all.

There are two crop circles off the A4, one on either side of the road. Most are made by anonomous people but every so often one comes along that defies explanation. No footprints, overlaid crop, one minute a field of wheat, ten minutes later a massive crop formation. It's tempting to read messages in these ones but what message does a snowflake hold?

Can we have a link to a photograph of one of the latter please?

Although some are undoubtedly man made, many others are most certainly not. Unfortunately, the prevailing and rather facile 'man with a plank' theory re. all crop circles prevents serious research into this phenomena, and this is not helped by the more extreme fringe element, whether there is a natural explanation, or indeed some extra terrestrial element involved.

I read a number of years back of a theory suggesting the first stone circles came about by farmers marking the perimeters of flattened crop caused by spiral vortexes.... quite a common summer phenomenon in areas where escarpment edges disrupt airflow. Although I've never seen one actually flatten crop in real time , I've seen a few highlighted by spiralling chaff and felt some moving past... invisible mini tornadoes. For an ancient farmer to have seen one in action would no doubt have blown his mind with thoughts of visitation by spirits etc. 'Must record this moment and lock in the power' by demarcating the space. Apparently perfect egg-shaped rings can also be obtained in this manner - without the need for Thom's mathematical theories - as the vortex shifts its axis.

I've therefore no problem whatsoever with simple crop circles as a natural phenomenon and with them being intrinsically linked with human ritual going back to the dawn of civilisation - the first fields of cultivated crops. The complex geometric crop circles are another matter... some are obviously simply wondrous artificial artistic statements, whatever the artist is trying to say. Others currently defy explanation.

There's some very interesting information that can be cross referenced on this particular site. The problem is, finding interesting/serious data etc is quite laborious due to the sheer number of sites that include it amongst the more spurious fringe element material. In my opinion it's a fascinating area, if approached with patience, clear thinking and an open mind.

It's spooky to look at it backwards. So crop circles became more complex as we learned geometry and proportion? But there does seem to be a link somehow. Most crop circles occur in Wiltshire (eg) - it's not short of prehistoric monuments either!
