You really would think that they would have something better to do, wouldn't you. I was once called a hobbit, in a nice way, by a very tall person. That doesn't matter, does it ?

I personally think the best bet is just to leave this alone! if it is trolling let them get on with it and if not well.....again just get on with it.
I chose not to continue with two threads because I was not sure if individuals were just trying to get a rise at the expense of reasonable debate or whether they were trolling!
I haven't the time or patience at the moment.

I would not presume that because a post "gets a rise" that it is a 'Troll' posting.
People who post are from many and varied educational backgrounds. Some post as fun and some like to 'cut their teeth' on debate.

I should have clarified. It was an extremely tall German woman in a bar in San Diego who called me a hobbit. It wasn't online. She did introduce me to the meanest son of of a gun Bloody Mary though, back in my unhealthy days. Phew. Peace and Love everyone.

Trolls come to forums for entertainment. The internet is just a playground to them and anything can and will be said by them.

Attaching normal social morays to troll posts is a foolish practice. It is very important to remember they will deliberately attempt to wind up marks by any means and if a mark isn't prone to anger they will instead attempt to discredit their arguments.

Other popular tactics include
- acting the victim especially if attacked back or called out as a troll
- agreeing with some posters to drive a rift in a normally passive forum
- circular logic and logical fallacies ie X is true therefore Y must be
- grouping with other trolls, each playing a different yet complimentary role eg agitator and supporter or victim and white knight.

Other troll tactics......
They also post under more than one name, sometimes even giving the appearance of having conversations with their alter-egoes and will post against a "target" using all the personae they have created. If they have ever been banned from a site they reregister with a new name and pretend to be a new poster too.

Thank you, you two. What remarkably similar IP addresses you have. I think we'd better lock the thread if you yourself find it off topic.
Thanks.
