I was hopiong that someone could help me identify some sites I encountered whilst in Shetland. The first is one on an island, close to Scalloway, wherein there is a circle with a central cairn, and a cairn further away on a hill. I do have photographs, but I don't know how to attach them here. The second is two upright stones opposite a loch on heading north. They can be seen from the road, at the bottom of some hills and they are resting in a peat bog. The third is singular stone by the roadside overlooking a golf course. Is anyone able to help? I've checked out the pictures on this site to no avail and I don't know the grid references because I was not driving, I was with a tour group.

Howdo AC If you register at Canmore, it's free, you can search the database by grid ref you'll hopefully find your stones and a lot more besides. http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/PORTAL.wwa_app_module.show?p_sessionid=618674&p_header=true cheers fitz

Westings Hill and Wormdale Hill might be likely candidates .

This "standing stone" appears to be a natural protrudence from the bedrock: http://www.flickr.com/photos/british_isles/2742929916/in/photostream/ And this "cairn within standing stones" doesn't seem to fit the description: http://www.flickr.com/photos/british_isles/2742093461/in/photostream/ Show us something prehistoric and we'll probably identify it for you. ;o) baz

The wall in the second photograph could be prehistoric - and that does look like a standing stone in front of it ...

My suspicions have been aroused because no one on TMA or TMP has been able to identify either site...so far. So, looking again, it may be the case that the photos have been composed, or cropped, to appear prehistoric. I'm not making an outright accusation, just a suggestion, to try to explain our collective inability, so far, to make any identifications. Certainly, the "cairn within standing stones" photo seems to be too close up to convey the full magnificence of the site it claims to be....and how come we've never heard of it? http://www.flickr.com/photos/british_isles/2742093461/in/photostream/ Please, someone, identify the sites and prove me wrong. baz
