Thanks for the pointer to the John Michell book - which I haven't seen (yet). The word tolmen is sometimes used for holed stones - it would be useful to have a specific term. I've found quite a few of these - and have even claimed one - and they are almost always derided as field furniture. Gateposts. It's made more difficult as they have often been later used as gateposts. In lancashire a rectangular 4:3 hole is not unusual. My individual method for checking their antiquity is to measure the dimension of the hole with a megalithic ruler. If the hole is in even units of a Megalithic Inch (0.816") then I suppose it is prehistoric. The Megalithic Inch is still used in 'the orient' and in acupuncture, where it is termed the body inch. I guess I'd better not mention Cher!
