Ramblings (New series)

Clare Balding explores routes with connections to the past.

She walks the Ridgeway in the company of comedian and activist Mark Thomas. A stone circle enthusiast, Mark explains why walking has become so important to him and how he plans the venues for many of his gigs around the ancient sites he wants to visit.

Available on listen again and (bestly) podcast afterwards.

I have just 'listened again' to this wonderful little programme. Thank you very much for the link. I know the walk they did very well as I live in Swindon. Mark Thomas does indeed come to the Art's Centre at least once a year, now I know why. He visits stone circles while he is on tour. His description of Wayland Smithy was particularly evocative.

For anyone who loves this particular sacred landscape may I recommend "Villages of the White Horse" written by Alfred Williams in 1913 (published by Nonsuch ISBN-13-978-1-84588-061-3).

He was born in the Wiltshire countryside, worked in the GWR Factory for 23 years, lived in relative poverty and was self educated. He walked along the Ridgeway visiting many nearby villages as he went, recording local customs and dialects. Its more about rural life in the early 20th century rather than archaeology but very fascinating.
