And the bad news is .....
Mar 08, 2002, 08:44
Actually, there's two bits of bad news and some interesting stuff too ...

Recently I was at Sleivenagriddle in County Down, an enigmatic site to say the least. Resting on the top of what appears to be a natural bluff but could also be a MASSIVE passage tomb cairn is a large stone slab. This has been classed as being many things. Is it a collapsed dolmen? Is it the top of a passage tomb? Or is it just a large slab?

Well, when we reached the top we had found that some fecker had been digging up there (this is part of the bad news)! This did however expose a form of structure beneath. Scratch the "just a large slab theory"! This damage was reported to the authorities and the editor of Archaeology Ireland magazine (and authority big-wig) came to have a look. One thing was decided, i.e. it is actually most likely to be a 'round cairn' of the type found in County Leitrim with a very rare megalithic kist burial beneath the unusually large slab for the type (this is the interesting part).

The real bad news is that he stated that currently there are an estimated ** 115,000 ** megalithic sites in Ireland !!!!! Still, it's kinda good to know I'll NEVER run out of places to visit.
