ah maybe you've hit the nail on the head there, WF, if you want to "at least try to do something because it's on my doorstep and I feel for the place. " - it's easier to get fired up over your own local patch, I know I do feel protective over the places I know locally. When you visit them often or at least now and again, at different times of year, they mean something personal to you. Maybe that's why Moth finds it difficult to gee people up for Heritage Action, it's a kind of 'think global act local' thing, where people would contribute money to a big organisation (like the RSPB or English Heritage..) because they know Someone will use their money to do grand country-wide things. But when it comes to Doing Something Practical, maybe most people feel they can only do a little, and feel overwhelmed at the scale of things, and are best doing something close to home. hmm.
