I know it's a cliche, but leave only footprints, only take photographs

To all, I agree, What if I want my ashes interred at Stonehenge, for instance? It'd be laughed at, and rightly so, so keep Silbury free of any interferrence, and of any deposits. Let's not be selfish. Regards, TE.

I did know there was a suggestion that the hill was opened with a bit of a do, the idea was it would concentrate the media attention so that education of the wider public about Silbury accompanies the dig. It would also give those that have some connection whether acrchaeological or spiritual, to pay their respects and set the project off on a good footing. I have no idea about where this idea of putting something inside came from, perhaps it was in response to a request ? Sadly there is a precedent of course with John Merewhether the Dean of Hereford leaving a time capsule in 1849, a pot containing Christian meeting posters an almanack, a poem, and newspaper cuttings. As it was their tunnel and the fact they proudly removed as much timber propping as they did to save cash that undermined what was this week rightly described as is 'the oldest building in Britain', I am with Cursuswalker I think it should be filled with chalk pure and simple. I am inreceipt of information indicating that what is going to be deposited in Silbury is a stone that was removed during the digging of the original tunnels. So long as that is ALL that is going in this may already be resolved. But an open eye would probably still be a good idea.

Well, an invitation to Pagans, PLUS this stone..... sort of opens the field for other things to be suggested - by others.... It all sounds a bit unclear to me. What stone? Why? Will it have a plaque attached? Bear in mind, one of the guiding principles that the Silbury project team set itself was "new work must be distinguishable". Sticking an old stone back in, in a different spot, might seem a small matter but it does transgress the principle and if it can be done in that instance it could be done in others. So "Nothing but chalk" (and it would need to be "marked" with inert glass beads or whatever) seems a nice safe campaign call to me.

The exact quote I have is "a piece of Sarsen stone that was stolen out of Silbury Hill when the hole accurred in '01" Hmmm.....that stolen thing makes me look twice actually.
