Actually now you come to mention it...
Looking at the photos of the rock and with my just my own bit of knowledge of the area it does bear a resemblance to the surrounding landscape and valley. The rings on the right , nearest to the ladder - would describe Bowfell and the Langdale pikes, site of the axe factory. The parallel lines could correspond to the trackway, which incidently would pretty much be were the road through Langdale is now. Alternatively there is a river running through the valley (obviously!) which follows pretty much the same course. The marks on the top left would correspond to the hilltops on the far side of the valley or maybe even as far as Coniston and its surrounding mountains. It'll be interesting to get there and compare it to the OS map.
