Re: 'sacred' sites
Jun 07, 2006, 20:16
When I started visiting sites, I went there thinking they were spiritual places, and that i could feel a sense of peace there. But strangely, the more ancient sites I see, the more I regard them as historical architecture. There are still some sites that make me feel they were built for a "higher purpose" but so many of them feel to me like FTC's bus shelters now!

For example, on Orkney I was awe-inspired and struck by the beauty and calm and (to me) clearly sacred Stenness, then you see the places where these people lived (at Skara Brae and the settlement at Tomb of the Eagles) and where they buried/honoured their dead.

Sorry, waffling a bit here. What I am trying to say is that the more I see, the more I see the differences between the sites - some seem more sacred, some less.
