I've been thinking about the pronunciation of the word "cnoc" (as in <a href="http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/202"><i>Cnoc Fillibhear Bheag</i></a>, for example), as described by Margaret Curtis (and in big papery TMA, among other sources) as being not dissimilar to "krawk". I couldn't see how this could be so and thought it might be possible that the source for all of this could be the same place/person, and could be wrong.
Part of my reasoning is that a friend of mine wot knows a bit of the old Gaelic says he always thought it was "knock".
A little research has dug up this gem of a document: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/freefun/didyouknow/placenames/Gaelic_guide.pdf
The wee bit referring to the above simply says "cn: like cr".
http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/arb/scotland/gaelic.html also says that:
<i>"cnoc" [pronounced crock] means "hill"</i>
Just thought I'd point you to the PDF, in a roundabout way, cos I quite enjoyed it.
Anybody got any other unfathomable pronunciations of megalithic sites? :o)
