A bone to pick
Nov 30, 2001, 13:02
At Discover Odin Julian was saying that the origin of 'German' was from a tribe known as the Tungermans. I have to say that this is certainly not the accepted etimology of the word.

The usual roots of 'German' is the same as a wheat germ, coming from the Latin germanus or germen which means offshoot. It is also where germinate comes from.

In my recent, but admittedly short, stint of research into roman/pre-roman Europe I have n't come across the Tungerman tribe at all and I'm quite perplexed. Does anyone know where JC picked up this idea from or have any books/info that refers directly to this ancient tribe?

Thanks in advance for any help.
