Hi and welcome. If you go to the main part of The Modern Antiquarian and find Stonehenge you will find all the information, and pictures you need. Unfortunately you are right that the stones cannot be approached closely, but English Heritage (The guardians[Ha!] of the site) do allow special access at some times and dates. I was extremely fortunate to be there on one of those dates in Dec. Jim.

Your best bet is probably to visit around June and be there for the Summer Solstice. There will be several thousand other folks there, but I'm sure you'll manage to fight your way to the stones somehow :-)

The good news is that at most stone circles in the British Isles other than Stonehenge, you can sit among the stones - and in most cases be completely on your own. It IS magic. Welcome to TMA. Stay warm! J x

That is just the worst time to visit Stonehenge - unless you really like being in a drunken noisy pushing mob. To be alone at Stonehenge you will have to book time in advance ... and pay.

To be alone or in a small group within Stonehenge is possible. You will need to complete this form. Go to http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/upload/pdf/0506_StoneCircleAccess.pdf

Jane's words will strike a chord with everyone who contributes to this site, Stonehenge is by far the most well known of the Neolithic monuments in this country but there are thousands of others. Some are very isolated and difficult to get to but one is so large the built a village in the middle (look up Avebury). Stonehenge can disappoint as there are hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, it is right next to two main roads and the visitor facilities are a disgrace. Do as Jane suggests when you visit and seek out the less well-known places and enjoy. Do let us know when you can come over as I am sure that many of us would be delighted to show you our favourite stones. Jim. P.S. Are there any stone circles in the Ukraine?
