Re: Richard Jefferies: Story of My Heart

Aye, it's a fair bit of writing and no mistake - the line between poetry and prose gone.

What you say about him being from Wiltshire, and the place soaking into him is absolutely true - it happens to most of us. I think it's the rolling landscape there that is maternally soft, welcoming and uplifting. There's a plaque to Jefferies at Liddington Castle that reads -

LIDDINGTON HILL
THE HILL LOVED OF
RICHARD JEFFRIES
AND
ALFRED WILLIAMS*

and a little museum to him at Coate Water. I used to push me brother in a pram down to Coate, and we'd sit by the water and feed the ducks. In the distance you can see Liddington Hill and Castle - that, by the way, is my first memory of an ancient site (in this life anyway ;-)

As has been suggested, it might be useful to have the titles/poets as part of the post headings. When I have a moment I will try to change any that are not clear.

Crikey, that was quick! Thanks, much better now.

Alright, Mr H?

He doesn't have to read them anyways! That's the beauty of keeping them all on one thread! :o)

Sorry, LS... ;o)

Under the Hills Near the Morava River

She lay there midst

Mammoth, reindeer, and wolf bones;

Diadem of fox teeth round her brow

Ocher under her hips

26,640 plus or minus 110 years before "now".

Burnt reindeer-pelvis bone bits
in her mouth,

Bones of two men lying by her side,
one each side.

Gary Snyder - Taken from Mountains and Rivers Without End

Ah, good stuff, and nice to cross paths with an old acquaintance again under the banner of poetry.

Norman MacCaig: A Man in Assynt:
Oct 12, 2006, 11:54
Who possesses this landscape?

The man who bought it or

the poacher staggering downhill in the early morning

with a deer on his back?

Who possesses this landscape?

the man who bought it or

I who am possessed by it?

False questions, for

this landscape is masterless

and intractable in any terms

that are human.”

Norman MacCaig: Treeless Landscape
Oct 12, 2006, 12:03
Something to do with time has all to do
With shape and size. The million shapes of time,
Its millions of appearances are the true
Mountain and moor and tingling water drop
That runs and hangs and shakes time towards a stop.

This and his other poem have been carved into blocks of stone at Knockan Crag.
