Scottish ship graffiti
Jan 25, 2005, 15:35
Hi all.
First time on.
I'm a freelance archaeologist, my pet research at the mo is Scottish ship graffiti, does any body know of any examples or have you stumbled over any thing that looks like it could be a ship, carved, incised or pecked onto any structure, cave or boulder on your travels?. I've got a fairly big data base already, so I may already know about the ones you know of, but would be keen to hear from you any way, a fresh pair of eyes and all that!. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes. Adelphi

Hi Adelphi,

There's what has been interpreted as a boat carving on a cist slab from the Ri Cruin cairn in Kilmartin. And I'm sure you know about the ship in Jonathan's cave at Wemyss.

Can't think of any others off the top of my head just now

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy.

Thanks for your reply, got both of them already. Ri cruin is a fairly recent 'possible' addition to the data base, a work mate in the NMS in Edin' who's the Bronze Age specialist there has suggested another interpretation for that carving, this 'possible' ship depiction is on one side slab of a cist, which is inserted into the cairn, the opposite slab has a series of flat axes pecked into it, and he has suggested that the 'ship' depiction could represent a hafted Bronze Age halberd with a series of attachments or pennants tied to the shaft, an interpretation that could fit in with the axe depictions? I've included it in my data base any way because it has been interpreted as a vessel previously in the past, and I'll keep an open mind about it at the mo',
best wishes and many thanks.

Hi and welcome.

There's one by Loch Creran. On the hill above the N shore E of the Creagan Inn.

Quite modern looking, from memory.

Hi greywether.

Many thanks for your reply, the one your mentioning at Loch Creran is a depiction of a typical 16th- 17th century West highland galley, and a good depiction as well!, as far as i'm aware the only other graffito of a W H galley is on recently excavated on a stone from the excavations at Inchmarnock, an island off Bute, which I should be going to see fairly soon.
on you travels have you ever been to Clachtoll near Loch inver? theres supposed to be a series of boulders in a hollow in the hills above the deserted village of Clachtoll with a large collection of ship graffiti on them, and another boulder(s) nearby with some on as well, aledgedly carved by the emigrants before they set sail for America, I've never managed up to see them (yet) but if your in the area any time?, the grid ref I was given is NC 0540 2715, they are supposed to be in quite an evocative setting. Many thanks again,

all the best, Alan
