"Usmere" *Shudder*

I get the feeling I must know you! Anyhow, I used to live in Ismere/Usmere (in Waggon Lane), and there are all sorts of lumps and bumps (not the Golf Course) which I haven't checked out properly. Years ago Wychburyman, Wychburygirl and myself formulated a plan to build a website chronicling Wychbury and environs. Nothing came of it other than purchasing the domain name (wychbury.org), which subsequently I lost by not renewing. So I think it's time to get a new domain-name and set it up? wychburyhill.org?

LOL!

I've now got wychbury.org - how mad is that? I am planning to put a page up about Wychbury Hill on there so it will still have a little bit of what was intended. I started a history of Halesowen/surrounding areas website years ago and collected a lot of local information/photos so if any of it is any use to you please let me know!

*feels really guilty*

All good stuff! My uncle said the warriors were chieftains of the defeated side (so, i guess the Celts) who had been such noble opponents that they were honoured in this way, but also the deep roots of the Yew were thought to keep spirits underground instead of wandering around doing mischief. Great to hear that i didn't just imagine all this 30 years and more ago!! I'm also fascinated by the St. Kenelm stuff, so if you know any thing about that (i have a feeling it may be connected in some analeptic way) let me know more.....

"BTW if anyone sees this bloke walking a mad black and white springer spaniel over the hill - come and say hello :-)"

That's right, except for the 'come and say hello' bit. Run away as fast as you can would be nearer the mark.

Funny thing is, I think the earliest Anglo Saxon Jutish people did have burial mounds (Ship burils included) --- but I don't reckon the ones around Blakedown are of that provenance. Maybe, Harborough hill was the original, small defended place of some local Lordling, but this was outgrown when serious raiding (from the west) took place, and Wychbury fortified at a later date??? Then re fortified again much later? I postulate that they wanted to defend the saltways from droitwich too, and possibly Wychbury was a centre from which they could escort this valuable commodity (and Iron goods too, from Vertis/Worcester) along the routes to the North, and West to the river. JRR Tolkein, eat your heart out...

So, Carl Baldacchino of the West Midlands Police thinks "Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?" is "Just a joke". Honi Soit qui Bell y pense....

Here's a little poem wot I wrote for Carl Baldaccino of the West Mercia police:

Oh, Maiden and mother, Old Hag and Crone,
Entrance and Possess me,
Make My life my own,
Oh, do not forsake me in dark or in light,
And make of my dreaming,
A sure second Sight,

For 'twas all for Bella, all for Bella,
Four lucky lads from far Hagley,
Went plucking Skulls Eggs
From the old Wych Elm tree.

On Wychbury hill, of ancient renown,
A mighty old Battle was fought near this town,
Some say it was Arthur
That carried the fray, and he lies
Beneath Saddleback hill to this day,

They say was prince Kenelm
The young Mercian King,
That Harrow ed Hell
To bring forth the spring,
Of Crystal pure water
The fair River Stour,
And he will return when
The men match the hour.

Ring any bells Carl???
