I appreciate stones and get that feeling that Nigelswift is describing, and coming at it from a very similar angle BUT I get the same feelings looking at York Cathedral, or Kings College, or the Tate Modern or some amazing new builds including that glass gherkin going up in London. I don't think, therefore, that my spirit of place aesthetic is linked to the nature/pre-lapsarian ideas.

"I have real problems trying to Put Myself in Their Shoes." No one can put themselves "in their shoes"! It's impossible, just like only I can put myself "in my shoes". You can have a good go and get quite close, but you'll never manage it. Some people just manage to "try" better than others, and in some cases to delude themselves that have actually succeeded. This is not a comment on anyone on this forum in particular or generally, but a direct response to the one sentence above.

Yes and in return, the original sentence was me trying to sum up that idea in one line, not sure of the success but you get the idea. I find it difficult to imagine what something was like years ago, after all it's right there, in front of me? Here, in this moment... was there ever another time? Perhaps I have no imagination. I blame TV. .o0O0o.

Interesting. "...maybe put a little more on the 'spiritual' side, but not 'spiritual' in the sense most 'spiritual' people mean it." Think I know what you mean, and I think that's why it's LOW on my list. "Visiting shite sites is a little obsessive for me ... I do need to collect them all. Everything else is a bonus." Think there's a bit of that in me too. "I just add landscape study to my visits to rationalise it all." Possibly a BIT worse than me then! love Moth

I think it's a number of things for me, depending where you go. At Waylands its peace, mingled with a sort of awareness. Things sometimes seem clearer, leaves are greener, sounds are clearer. Everything just seems so much more real. Other places & times I just get lost in a sort of daze, closeing your eyes & just feeling. I suppose thats where the spirit bit comes in. Everywhere has energy bound up in it, whether it be in the form of movement of trees in the wind or the energy that others put into building such things. You cannot fail to be impressed at how it was done. It's also a feeling of safety & shelter sometimes. Quite often your entering a place which is either fairly secluded or is just so ancient you can almost smell it & its kind of comforting. I can't really say why I like to visit the stones or trackways & hill forts, only that I feel better when I do. It's that simple. I would however give just about anything, just to see things as they were originally, as they were intended. Maybe the spirits do hang around, in whatever form. I'm not talking ghosts or anything, but just the energy or force of what was left behind. Oh well, thats me anyway. Here come the nice little men in white coats to take me away.......... B

Love it!! Nigel.... I think we ARE all in agreement. Many of us have scars from organized religion... the saddest part is that it caused us to fear our true nature.... let the healing begin! Your a Beauty Nigel
