Swell Maps
Mar 10, 2003, 06:10
Anyone like the Swell Maps? They have to be the most ignored/best kept secret of non-populist music. So much so, that i even forgot to listen to them for about 3 years! Just listening to my old cd's and think they are fantastic.

Yes, they deserve attention, Jane From Occupied Europe is a great album. Big influence on Sonic Youth and others who don't even know it.

Yup! , Jane From Occupied Europe is indeed fine fair, though my Fav' track is 'Midget Submarines' from A Trip To Marineville, i love the way the drum sounds at the intro, and the guitar sound is wired.
Not got the instrumentals/Outakes/ CD that mute are selling...worth checking out?
Think Kusworth now owns a recording studio in Harbourne near Birmingham, and sometimes helps out in Highway 61 record store in Wolverhampton (owned by one of the fellas he was in the Jacobites / Bounty Hunters with if i remember rightly?).

Love 'em, dude, especially "Jane..." which I agree is their best album, although "Marineville" ain't that far behind. Even purloined the name Midget Submarines for my new band.

I also read in an old Jacobites interview that Dave Kusworth hated Swell Maps and regarded Jacobites as a completely seperate project (which it certainly was as far as the music was concerned).

Yeah, i can believe that (all that 'wasted' chic and velvet...and he used to smell something rotten too). Mind you whenever i saw the Jacobites live i couldn't help thinking second rate Nick Drake. An old (old) girlfriend bought the .... Velvet Basement LP and used to play it to death...needless to say our days were numbered from the first time the needle hit the vinyl :)

Kusworth's songs on the Jacobites' LPs are far superior to those written by Nikki Sudden in that they at least have something resembling a melody. Been thinking about selling off my extensive Maps/Sudden/Jacobites collection lately as they never get any play.
As one who spent a month on the road with Mr. K, I can confirm that he does indeed smell something awful.

One of my favourite 7" singles ever. And I have to agree with Tele., 'Midget Submarines' is a standout album track!

I've gone on about the Maps here before.."Jane.."was one of my inspirations to first start recording all those years ago (as The 'Copter Weasels..a Batman comic lift)

"Jane.." is my favorite album as well, although like several other folks,"Midget Submarines" from Marineville is a big fave as is 'Gunboats"

First heard the Maps when I was still in high school via a friend who got the Rough Trade compilation that had "Read About Seymour"..he had a sister in Chicago who was able to find it (this was long before the internet and this is a small farm town) and also 'Jane.." which we cherished....The use of found objects and wind up toys etc..just screamed to me.."It's Ok to Do-It-Yourself!!!"..again long before etc etc*wheeze*cough*

I like someof the Sudden/Jacobite stuff..."Son of a French Noblemen".."Big Store(orig)"..It'll All End Up in Tears" and some others..gets a bit samey and derivative, but the songs listed can make me well up if the mood is 'right'

If you plan on ditching anything DF let me know..'ppears my brother lost..or seriously misplaced..the Jowe Head disc..*a'grumble*

"gee..That's a swell map!"
