From Springsteen to Southampton!!!
Feb 11, 2003, 12:31
Possibly a better night out! If you busk in the afternoon it's free!

A STAR-studded concert takes place in Southampton next month to pay tribute to the legendary frontman of The Clash and raise cash for the Fire Brigades Union.

The city's The Artful Dodger and Billy Bragg are among acts confirmed for the event, the first of a series of nationwide memorial shows for
Joe Strummer. Some proceeds from the gig, at the Maple Leaff Club in The Polygon, will go to the FBU in support of striking firefighters.

The concert, on February 22, will feature a range of day-long entertainment. It kicks off at 10am with a mass busking session outside WestQuay shopping centre by Southampton musicians

The gig, which features speakers including FBU leader Andy Gilchrist, and DJs starts at 1.30pm with live music at 6.30pm. Richard Chorley,
organiser of the Strumming 4 England concert (S4E), said: "S4E is a collective of artists, musicians and political activists who have come
together to create a positive culmination of Joe Strummer's ideals following his passing.

"It is the intention of S4E to fight back against the corporate plastic pop machine and to re-align popular music in the UK with the artistic,
political and ideological passion it utilised at certain periods during the 1960s, 70s and 80s. This is probably the best line-up Southampton
has had for a decade."

Strummer, whose hits with The Clash included London Calling and Should I Stay Or Should I Go, died of a heart attack in December.

Admission is £5 with donations of second-hand records, CDs or videos or £10 without. For details call Richard Chorley on 07714 400533.
