There's some really good Chuck D stuff about why Gansta rap sucks. It's an aspirational thing. You can aspire to chains, ho's, respec' and guns; or , you can aspire to changing your and others situation and making the world a better place for all.

Been looking, but can't find a link to it online, yet.

Not what I was looking for (check out his book 'Fight The Power: Rap, Race and Reality' - cheap in Fopp) and bizarrely from the Onion:

"...this is a society that is always treading on black people, who are being thrown negativity and are adopting the negativity. Being positive is like going up a mountain. Being negative is like sliding down a hill. A lot of times, people want to take the easy way out, because it's basically what they've understood throughout their lives."

Hmm. Interesting one. On the whole I agree with ratcni01. Living in Brixton means I regularly hear about or see police signs asking for witnesses to shootings. Packing a piece does seem cool to a lot of people (black AND white, may I add), and gangsta rap reflects this. But does it encourage it? I think to some degree it does, seeing the way a lot of kids in my area ape the attitude, the misogyny, homophobia etc. I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that all it does is relect the situation. However, having said that IT MUST NOT BE BANNED. This would make it even cooler, and we should have faith in rappers also expressing the flip side to the gun-toting stuff. A debate within the rap movement is the only way to tackle this issue healthily.

Besides, this music and its lyrical content should be none of the home secretary's business, and his comments are a red herring when the real causes of gun crime are inner-city deprivation and social exclusion and all the issues that stem from them. THAT is what the government should be discussing. Rap is being made a scapegoat by the spin-doctors, and David Blunkett is unwittingly making it cooler by commenting on it the way he has.

i reckon all rap music should be replaced with just one rap song....

the almighty "Cant touch this" by mr MC Hammer............ ooooooooooh yeh!

that would sort everyone out... be too busy grooving to be arsed with gunz and ho's

:p

actually (loathe ho i am to defend the shitbag) blunkett didn't quite say that - that was one of the juniors mins i think. blunkett showed some sympathy for the notion, but distinctly DIDN'T explicitly endorse it.

cos of course it's complete bollocks. There have been two fatal shootings in my locality recently - boith of notorious (if also popular) figures. the idea that the people doing did so because of gangsta rap, in any way shape or form, is utterly laughable. they did it because they're in bloody gangs! and wanted each otheres trade. even the dumbass pigs say so!

don't forget his "Hammer Rap", or some such, it was his other big hit.

those were the days, who's best: MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice? we didn't sit on fences then, we had to make those big decisions.
