I was in the mid 90's/ early 2000's. It was hard keeping up wit all the iterations he came out with at the time, he seemed fairly prolific. First heard him on the John Peel Radio show many many moons ago, where his songs and sessions were a fairly regular feature. Love the earlier stuff more than the more recent efforts. Think it was that slight DIY/ thrown together vibe along with those plaintive/ lost sounding vocals. Have come across this album of late that gets a fair few spins ... kinda has an Oldham vibe Gareth Liddiard - Strange Tourist https://tropicalfstorm.bandcamp.com/album/strange-tourist

Yeah, I MUCH prefer the earlier stuff (Palace/Palace Brothers)also the first Superwolf album with Matt Sweeney. His more recent stuff is a bit Meh

Cheers for the Superwolf heads up, will have a listen. The guy I recommended is in another group Tropical Fuck Storm too who are worth a listen (in fact I think I'd heard and enjoyed them before I knew Lidyard ws a member). https://tropicalfstorm.bandcamp.com/

Got into him for a while 10/15 years ago, but now only listen to his Palace incarnations from time to time and that Ode Music too. I am sure I could listen to some stuff beyond Palace sometime again - but got rid of a lot of them in a cd spring clean while back but made sure the Palace ones were kept and the one he did with The Trembling Bells worth a listen, ditto the one he did with Greg Weeks and Meg Baird from the Espers.

Similar to what the others have said, I was very much into him in the early 2000s, along with that whole crop of downer indie/alt. country/slowcore stuff like Smog, Red House Painters, Low, Papa M, Jim O’Rourke, Wilco, Loose Fur, Codeine, Appendix Out, Songs: Ohia, Cat Power etc, but I lost track of his output after “Superwolf” in 2005. I saw him live at the end of that year, supporting Current 93 in Italy- he didn’t play a single song that I recognised…I’m guessing it was stuff that ended up on “The Letting Go”? Whatever the case, it didn’t inspire me to pick up said record when it did emerge, though I recall being slightly tempted to check out the covers effort he did with Tortoise at the very least! But yeah, I still pull the CDs out every few years to wallow in the miserablist nostalgia! “I See a Darkness” was always a particular fave and “Arise Therefore” is spectacularly depressing!

Looks like a film OST. https://willoldham.bandcamp.com/album/ode-music Which for some reason led me to think of this, more moody noodlings to a documentary by Boxhead Ensembe. https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kzRId-UTcPERg60jCygpvnrCBr8QMUSh4
