*Have to take issue with Cope over his dissing of 'Revolution 9' and its surrounding tracks in the otherwise admirable Japrocksampler: "sandwiched between the sub-'I Am The Walrus' cod/plod of 'Cry Baby Cry' and the Spanish-galleon over-arrangement of Macca's mawkish 'Good Night..." Makes me think he's being deliberately negative to make a point. Whether you like 'Revolution 9' or not, the sequencing here is brilliant. Far from being a plod 'Cry Baby Cry' is a wonderfully sinister track with amazing dynamics and a sense of unease that leads perfectly into the nightmare that is to come. And 'Good Night' isn't Macca's, it's Lennon's - a lullaby for Julian (ironically). Undeniably and somewhat perversely mawkish, it's therefore the ideal comfort blanket after the extended musical carnage that has preceeded it.

Hello again, fellow music heads. This week I heard and enjoyed

Dr Feelgood ‘Sneakin’ Suspicion’
The Who ‘Live At Leeds’
Catherine Wheel ‘Ferment’
Lionel Richie ‘Can’t Slow Down’
Klaus Schulze ‘Cyborg’
Miles Davis ‘Miles Ahead’
Elgar: Introduction & Allegro/Vaughan Williams: Symphony no.6/Beethoven: Symphony no.7 (Halle/Barbirolli 1969)
Chopin: Fantasy in F minor, Op.49 (Nelson Friere)

Not enough music this week, sadly.

War Machine – Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
I haven't really given this enough attention. I was really impressed this time round.

Guesswork – Lloyd Cole
This 2019 album is one of only a couple of LC album I've bought in some time. It really is rather good.

India – Gal Costa
Brazilian album from 1973.

Peace & Love (Wadadasow) – Dadawah
Described by Norman Records as a “Classic long form spiritual reggae release from 1974 that has been a huge influence on subsequent artists. Four lengthy excursions into dubbed out, explorative soundscapes with hypnotic drums, spare guitar licks and heavy, heavy bass. Imagine something like a dub heavy, Jamaican Can and you are somewhere near the mark."

Semi-Legal On The Edge Of Culture – Dope
Wow. I'd forgotten just how good this is.

Bilingual – Pet Shop Boys
Pop Kids – Pet Shops Boys
Bilingual is such a hugely under-rated PSB's album. More percussive at times than usual, but full of pop splendour. As is Pop Kids appropriately enough.

Righteous Lite – Revolutionary Corps Of Teenage Jesus
Where Stephen Lironi becomes Martin Rev for the day. Excellent late 90's album now available on vinyl.

In Out In – Sonic Youth
Five track collection of soundchecks, jams, etc. As patchy as that may suggest on first listen.

Also...
Memory Device – Baba Ali

Shortwave Memories – Biosphere

Refuge – Devendra Banhart & Noah Georgeson

Gold Record – Bill Callahan

Frenz Experiment – The Fall

Countless Branches – Bill Fay

Sixteen Oceans – Four Tet

Kings Left Behind – Ikebe Shakedown

Private Space – Durant Jones & the Indications

For Ever – Jungle

Sonancy - Loop

Swingin' Calypsos – Lord Flea & his Calypsonians

Curtis – Curtis Mayfield
Sweet Exorcist – Curtis Mayfield

God's Son – Nas

Ancient Harmonies – Augustus Pablo
(Rising Sun / Rockers Comes East / Blowing With The Wind / One Step Dub)

Raise The Roof - Robert Plant / Alison Krauss

Dark Phase EP – Pye Corner Audio
Social Dissonance (Live At The Social, London 2019) – Pye Corner Audio

Happiness Not Included – Soft Cell

Put 'Em High 12” – Stonebridge Featuring Theresa

Dreadlock Sessions – Lynval Thompson

Pop Psychedelique: The Best Of French Psychedelic Pop 1964-2019 – V/A

Sampled Soul – V/A
