Bye Bye Burke Shelley

I just read this and am feeling rather sad.

https://www.loudersound.com/news/budgie-legend-burke-shelley-dead-at-71?utm_content=classic-rock&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=socialflow&fbclid=IwAR19-dIyxoDmkdkoX6xZxEHR4KqNrBr9kyBkIiqe3DIgW3o1d2wfY4tk_xU

I love Budgie and sadly never got to see them. Sometime in the 2000s i heard they had played a small gig in my town, but it slipped under my radar. How could that happen that these once heavy giants, who in my opinion are up there with Sabbath, arrived unannounced and unnoticed! Only one person I know even went!

After that I watched their website regularly but few uk gigs were on offer, if any. Then there was an announcement that Burke had taken ill and a European tour was cancelled. I don't remember ever seeing another gig or update after.

I've never understood why they lost their prominence over the years, they were hardly an underground band at the time, holding their weight amongst the other heavy hero's. Yet they seem not to have been given the same platform in history as their contemporaries. What a shame, i think they are one of the best bands of the time, their song writing was different, always heavily riff driven but with brilliant melodies s, often unexpectedly tender with interesting lyrics. With many memorable song titles - Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman, hot as a docker's armpit, In The Grip of Tyre fitter's Hand. Burke had a strange voice its true, his range being a lot higher than other guys, i don't think it ever sounded out of place though.

here are some of my favourites, especially for you if you never listened to Budgie Before

Budgie were one of the first bands that I felt were 'mine' and once I was going to gigs I saw them as often as I could. The early albums get all the praise, but all of the albums with Tony Bourge on guitar have their moments and there are one or two gems on their later output.

For an awkward teenager with jam-jar bottom glasses, Burke Shelley was nothing short of an inspiration.

Budgie. Loved 'em!

Cheers Burke.

I played Zoom Club loud enough to rattle the gates of heaven tonight, herald his arrival and all that. Loved them from the moment I first heard them, and they stayed with me as other once beloved bands inexplicably fell from my favour. A mighty, mighty band. Mightiest of the power trios.
