Nyx Nótt – Au Pieds De La Nuit. New instrumental album from Aidan Moffat, ‘im out of Arab Strap. Lots of strings and echo-y drums, strangely oppressive but very good in places: https://soundcloud.com/melodic-records/radio-nyx

A Formal Horse – Here Comes A Man From The Council With A Flamethrower. Winner of best album title of the year. Young people doing something interesting with bits of the past, guessing they own a few King Crimson albums: https://aformalhorse.bandcamp.com/album/here-comes-a-man-from-the-council-with-a-flamethrower

75 Dollar Bill – I Was Real. Hmmm, ethno-blues-drone stuff that goes on way too long, but nice in relatively short doses: https://75dollarbill.bandcamp.com/album/i-was-real

Andrew Wasylyk – The Paralian. There’s a lot of this not quite post-rock/not quite pagan folk/not quite soundtrack music thing around. By any estimation, this is clearly ‘good’, but it didn’t completely engage me: https://aotns.bandcamp.com/album/the-paralian

BEAK> – Marc Riley sessions. I love these guys (and whoever took the time to post this): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrNPRXQmA3o / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoIBO2vQj-Y

Talk Talk – Kid Jensen sessions. Ditto. Whenever people refer to TT’s early stuff as ‘synth pop’, you can be pretty sure they haven’t actually heard it. These sessions from 81 and 83 are amazing, really revealing them more as post-punk art rockers who just happened to have a way with a decent tune… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slu2ClPUxUk / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyTdLUWUaBo

VA – Revolution: Underground Sounds Of 1968. Some gems on here, this in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYmT8r_ss0Q

Live:

IQ – The Garage, London. Asked to attend a gig by a band I haven’t seen in 35 years (eeek!), so had little idea what this was going to be like, but I actually rather liked them. It’s ‘modern prog’, but done with a minimum of bombast and even some subtlety in places. Also pleasingly heavy ;-)

Stick with it. I think it's fabulous. Beautiful at times.

Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest - Bill Callahan
On first listens, it sounded like Bill had forgotten how to write songs and that he just had random conversations over some acoustic guitar pluckings, but it kinda grows on you.

Cope Notes #1 – Teardrop Explodes
As you may know, I loved the Teardrop Explodes. From Liverpool cult band to genuine pop stars to forgotten heroes. All in four short years, leaving us with two vastly underrated albums and a string of great singles (and memories of some of the finest gigs I have ever seen). Always moving forward, never standing still and with more lineup changes in such a short time than even The Fall could match, the Teardrops were quite unlike any other group. Had Julian Cope popped his clogs at that point he would surely be spoken about with an Ian Curtis-like reverence and have the morbid squad dissecting his every utterance. Instead, of course, he went solo and embarked on a rich, fascinating, baffling, and quite bonkers career. But the Teardrops was where it all began and now Julian has suddenly, without any warning or fanfare whatsoever, released the Cope Notes #1 cd, a look back at those early days. Consisting of snippets of old recordings with added recollections over the top, it is quite unlike any other album I can think of - with the added bonus of a lovely booklet consisting of lyrics, photos etc. I'm not sure it is something I will play that often but I know for fact that it will be one of my most treasured music related possessions.
