Grateful Dead - AOXOMOXOA - original 1969 mix

A couple of weeks old now but this looks essential for fans of the album.
2CD or vinyl picture disc (yup!).

So finally on CD we now have the radically different and more psychedelic 1969 mix (All CDs previously have been the 1971 remix).
See also Seth's HH review for a good breakdown of the differences

About time! Considerably superior. I first came across this 1969 mix a wee while back and was totally blown away. Never played the 1971 one since then. Great to be available on CD at last. I don't know how the new coloured vinyl will sound though - they did re-issue the 1969 mix on vinyl few years back and it apparently sounds dreadful with over the top noise reduction. Might hold out and see if I can find an affordable decent pre-1971 press for that, but will do a bit of research ... Without a doubt the mix to have!

The CD sounds great - (not listened to the live tracks yet) and I have to say, the 1969 version compared to the 71 remix is up there in similar terms to the mono vs stereo of Piper at The Gates of Dawn for me. This is when psychedelia is at its best; loose, freely formed (different to free-form), unbalanced and disorientating. Brilliant - an album I'd always been underwhelmed with is now on heavy rotation - I like that!

Yeah. Having listened to the new CD of the 1969 version, there's a totally different vibe to it from the familiar '71 one. 'What's Become Of The Baby' gives out a much scarier feel than the sanitised later mix: I listened to it on headphones and it totally freaked me out - in a positive way (one of the truly unsung highlights of the Dead's psychedelic years methinks). All told, I'm inclined to think we've been truly deprived all these years, and I'll always favour this first version as being the definitive one. However, I think there's still room for the 1971 mix which tidies up the appealing mess of 1969 for the post-Workingman's Dead/CSNY crowd.

Great to re-read Seth's erudite 2002 review, by the way.
