Temple Of Bon Matin

Back to our regular programming discussing unsung RNR. I played a little catch up over the last couple days with the Temple of Bon Matin discography during a long road trip. I must say this Ed Wilcox had gotten better with age. The noisy cacophony of the early LPs has given way to a sort of free-spirit jazz influenced kraut sandwich. If you stopped listening after the AOTM, go track down:

Flower Footed Ghost
Monkeys Straw Raincoat
Unrock Gig Series (Live In-store)

And the non-Temple but almost perfect collaboration with Charles Cohen

Those Are Pearls That Were His Eyes

Which is Cohen on Buchla and Wilcox on drumssssss.

I must say that Unrock disc is great. Stripped down to a trio, and Wilcox mostly singing (chanting to the fire more like) and hitting the odd percussive instrument nearby, bass and electronics. That bass is great, and reminds me of Cope's solo track on Wasted Fuzz Excessive.

I'm not sure what he is up to now, the website hasn't been updated since version 3.1, but a quick YouTube search shows some recentish live activity.

So like the mighty Liquorball, TOBM refuse to die, but also refuse to retire. Thank god for people like Ed Wilcox.

Yeah I know those guys. Was on the same bill with them and To Live and Shave in LA back about almost 15 years ago. Great band.

Yeah, TOBM, Ed Wilcox etc are among artists that I really rate high and respect! My faves are still the first two TOBM albums + "Bullet Into Mesmer's Brain", "Cabin In The Sky" and "Infidel". And I also love love "Those Were pearls That Were His Eyes"!

Charles Cohen was a master of the Buchla (espesh the Easel)! Truly sad to hear what happened to him in the end, the sting, jail and so on (sounds bullshit to me..). I chatted with him a bit some years ago, seemed like a lovely guy! Also strange that he died just when the Buchla Easel became 'available' to some sort of public...

I know nothing of Cohen outside of the Pearls album, but the sounds he makes from that one machine are like nothing I've heard.

I've got to revisit the first LP and Cabin in the Sky, but I can't stop listening to the Unrock live cd. For me it's the distilled metaphor in album form Cope was searching for before he made the AOTM comp.
