Yes Sir I Will!

In line with the trend of performing an album live in its entirety Penny Rimbaud & Eve Libertine will perform a reworking of "Yes Sir I Will" in Blackpool in August. Not exactly everyone's favourite Crass album ... but sadly still relevant! News release pasted below.

BLACKPOOL – Thursday 7th August
Rebellion Festivals 2014
In commemoration of the thousands on both sides who died brutal, pointless deaths in WW1, Penny Rimbaud & Eve Libertine present a reworking of the Crass classic ‘Yes, Sir, I Will’ complete with a six piece band. They are joined by Gee Vaucher who will be showing the film of the same name. As Rimbaud puts it - “It will be good to do ‘Yes, Sir’ at the festival because it’s probably more relevant today than it was thirty-five years back, and all the more so for this being the centenary year of ‘the war to end all wars’ – will we ever learn?”. Day tickets are available for this special one off performance – see here: http://www.rebellionfestivals.com/tickets

Thanks for this. Can't get there, but good to hear about it. And Gee Vaucher's probably my favourite artist. Yeah, the sentiments are horribly relevant - in my part of the world, at least, it has been definately Not Done for some years now to object to the war in Afghanistan - the orthodoxy is to praise all soldiers as heroes, whatever they've got up to or why they're there.

Me neither - on holiday with family then. Members of Crass very active at mo, Steve Ignorant is playing in Glasgow this Saturday - can't make that either! I was grown up with them - really miss them and all the creativity and ideas surrounding them...

Good to hear they're still active. I did manage to get to their bash at the South Bank in 2002, just before I left London. Most of them sat in the row in front of me. I dearly wanted to thank them for all they'd done for me - I would not have survived my horrendous school years without them - but I was worried it would sound corny.

I'm with you there. It is not corny! Goodness knows if I would have survived my high school days without them. When I was 13 I was writing a fanzine and interviewed Steve via the post. Couldn't believe that he'd actually taken the time and effort to get back to me. A year later I took the fancy of starting a commune and I got a nice letter back from N.A Palmer full of advice ...(I never did take it one though) They really helped shaped who I am now and what I believe / don't believe in. And all the bands around them (The Mob, Flux, Omega Tribe, Zoundz etc ....) That would be all my pocket money blown. Turned all my friends into vegetarians with the Flux Neu Smell B-side - only to read later that Flux were not actually veggies and would sneak off during gigs for hamburgers ...

Crass always had time for people and I respected that a lot. They replied to my letters, too, even though I was very young and asked some fairly silly questions. I rang them up once and tried to get them to headline my band's first gig, but they were only doing benefit gigs by then and politely turned me down.

Which fanzine did you do??

I heard that Steve Ignorant 'liked a Big Mac', so these stories of non-veggieness seem to circle all these bands. Not sure if they're true or just playfulness. I'm still veggie 33 years after reading Crass and Flux's stuff on the issue.

And as for the crop circle - excellent stuff! Many thanks for that.

Yes, I did ask them some silly questions too. The fanzine was "Rock Is Sick". I only published issue 1 which featured The Poison Girls and local (East Kilbride) bands. Issue 2 which was to feature the Crass interview was never put together. I had by then (age 13/14) formed my first band and that was keeping me busy. I still have the interview - it is in a storage container along with other things no space for now that kid's toys take over ... When I come round to sorting the storage out I shall dig it out. Yup around 33 years of veggieness for me too with no relapses!

Perhaps you should publish that Crass interview online when you find it....
