I'm quite chuffed to have started such a popular thread. Coming soon, the sequel - Which Smiths albums?

Right you are - must admit shamefully. On most points that is. By the way only part of me's a chakra talking hippie - you haven't met the other ones. By the way: tolerance is overrated. Those who saw the LIGHT cannot cope with the average dumbness filling so many brains. And DON'T TAKE ME FUCKING SERIOUS! Daevid Allen had a Point singing 'bout Flying teapots instead...

The problem (assuming we are still talking about Kiss) with the whole "LIGHT" / "dumbness" duality is that being this year's laughing stock does not rule you out from being next year's flavour of the month and not only an influence on the current generation of indie Mr Ben artists but also the elder statesmen who suddenly remember that they were "always fans of" whoever is the beneficiary of the latest criticial exhumation. That's the nature of the beast. Some of those reappraisals are a one season wonder others are more worthy but that's down to whims of personal taste and cultural circumstance not critical permanence. Rock is by its nature impermanent. If we can't embrace that then the group of artists and records that we are led to believe form a pantheon just adds up to the same set of concrete booted certainties as those which were held, for example, by the the 70s Teds. What saves us from pretension and clay-footedness is being able to entertain the idea that what we love is also a bit shit and that which we think of as shit may have plenty to commend it.

Daevid Allen had a Point singing 'bout Flying teapots instead... He did! He did! And he made a 5 album (thus far!) trilogy which is pretty grand in my booklet! x "Av a cuppa tea...!"
