Reappraising the reappraisal... I've had similar misgivings about Cope's disappointingly scholaly writing in JRS (I couldn't really read it) but recently I decided to plumb the Top 50 beyond Les Rallizes and Far East Family Band. First stab: Karuna Khyal! https://youtu.be/x6ecbXfhcbk

"I've had similar misgivings about Cope's disappointingly scholaly writing." What does "Scholaly" mean? And you are criticising Cope's writing?

It's just a typo of 'scholarly', meaning academic or serious in style. To be honest, I enjoyed Japrocksampler greatly but it didn't have the same feel as his more immediate rock and roll writing in Krautrocksampler or Copendium. Not hard to read particularly, superbly researched and presented but required more time and concentration. (I can do Krautrocksampler in one sitting usually).

I do know what scholarly means. You've obviously missed my point

Yeah, misread you slightly, but the rest of my answer is my take on the book's style. Still great but not as entertaining as his other stuff. Heads and shoulders above most other so called rock writers of course.

I missed your point too. What - I mispell scholarly? Hahaha. My point was about missing the supreme LP I linked, partly cos I got bored with the book and, tbh, some of the albums further up the list that didn't inspire me much.

Itsuroh Shimoda -- Love Songs and Lamentations is one I'm not sure if Cope mentioned that I've been listening to lately -- lovely stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtCXPA-r6Wo
