.... aaaah the beauty of the ill-advised and self-inflicted cultural stereotype!

Best not mention my impending business trip to Poland and points East or indeed my Dutch wife's penchant for unusual and boyish headgear ....

He just got a squillion pound record deal so he's obviously doing something right. Though clearly it isn't music (boom boom).

He should form a duo with the tiny Canadian goth chap who won Rockstar Supernova. They could be the Little and Large of the cabaret circuit doing Placebo covers.

I'll take your word for it because i'm so not googling him, either. I'm still feeling odd btw. Np Carl Douglas' Kung Fu Fighting to calm me down. ;)

Oh you have to see the Rockstar Supernova guy (forget his name, he got to be in the band with the Motley Crue bloke and Gilby from GnR) doing Creep. It's compelling.

EDIT - Lukas Rossi. That's the chap. One good song of his own and a sizeable bag full of completely terrible cover versions.

The Shiny Beast album is re-recorded versions (I like them just fine!)

The unreleased versions (not all songs from SB were on BCP by the way) has been released in bootleg form (I think the CD is called Dust Sucker.)

Well, Zappa was always very big on protecting the rights to his music (he's one of the only rockers who actually owned his recordings as well as the composing rights -- except for the 200 Motels soundtrack, which due to the movie connection is owned by Warner Bros.)

And obviously he bequeathed it to his "family trust", which is presumably run by Gail, so I guess she really is keeping on his tradition. (Perhaps moreso than Dweezil, who frankly needs to get a life. He's a good enough musician to do his own thing.)

See it from the Zappa Family Trust perspective: it's the family business, it's probably all they've got in a sense (I doubt Frank had a lot of cash when he died, just a lot of tapes and music equipment.) With CD sales declining and all that, it could be kind of a big deal for a mom & pop operation (now that pop isn't around to make new product & tour.)

I had no idea there were so many Zappa tribute bands! Maybe it's more of a European thing? I've heard the occasional cover in a bar, but not often. Literally never heard of anyone doing it full time.

I also noticed they're pretty militant about getting Youtube to take down unauthorized Zappa video.

But this thread shows that obviously this type of attitude doesn't go over well with the "fans" (and non-fans will just start piling on, as happened with Metallica -- and Zappa's got no shortage of haters!)

If Gail wanted to do something really clever with all that tape she must be sitting on, she might try to figure out how to steal a page from Radiohead . . . give something away "free" as an entre to selling some fancy-schmancy expensive fan product.

(I think the ZPZ tour is as much about promoting Zappa and moving the catalog as it is about keeping Dweez employed.)

I have never felt the need to spend any money on a ZPZ ticket, despite the fact I owe the old man. I am not sure why Gail is doing this, she is fully aware about the future generation of Zappa fans as yet unborn. Perhaps its just a negotiation strategy.

I believe Zappa sold his catalogue to Ryko for about $17'000'000 before he died, which in the scheme of things GZ has to invest carefully in order to perform remedial work on the tape archive, and pay her staff.

I dunno, I do not think she could be that short sighted enough to piss off the few thousand Zappa fans now in their 40's plus who saw the great man live.

The zappa forum seems to have only about 20 regulars despite thousand of 'members'
