Amon Düül 1 / II - where to start?

Where's a good place to start or what to avoid. Any suggestions please?

Start with Yeti (AD II), then continue with Paradieswärts Düül (AD I), from then on you have to choose:
chaos road via Phallus Dei (AD II) straight to Psychedelic Underground (AD II)
or return to form via Tanz Der Lemminge, Carnival in Babylon, Wolf City and finally Vive La Trance (All AD II)
There's a more recent secret path leading straight to a little studio in the Welsh hills if you pass Meeting with Menmachines and Hawk Meets Penguin unheard (not worth a listen imho) and take in Die Lösung (Great Bob Calvert Vocals) and Fööl Moon (both AD - the 80s Welsh Branch by Dave Anderson (Ex ADII/Hawks) and John Weinzierl (AD II).
Which way will you choose?

Yes Yeti or Wolf city
Avoid Phallus dei cos i'll be honest apart from the first track it is pretty shit. Tanz Der Lemming is pretty impenetrable for a beginner. Later stuff like Hijack avoid at all costs, but if you come across a cheap 'Made In Germany' get that as it's got the great 'Loosey girls' which is worth the admission.
The best album is Paradieswarts duul by AD 1, just for the bonus tracks which pre-empt Sousxie and the Banshees circa Join Hands by 8 years

Completely agree with you on this one. Wolf City is the most accessible AD2 release but is by no means compromised by that fact.
Paradieswarts Duul IMHO is the only AD1 worth buying (download the rest). The cover of it is worth the price of admission alone

Amon Duul I - Paradieswarts Duul, followed by Psychedelic Underground.
Amon Duul II - Yeti, then Phallus Dei, then Wolf City, then Carnival In Babylon, then Dance of the Lemmings (even though JC doesn't like it).
