The Muppets did do the song later ,yes,and probably Sesame St and even a local puppet show(Larry Smith and Puppets) used to use it,but it was around in the 60's
..origins vary,but it was used in an Italian skin flick early on as well apparently

As for Downtown, I find it hard to hear and not think of Rik Mayall singing as he went, well, downtown in the guise of Kevin Turvey in his 'special', The Man Behind The Green Door. Love it!

"Downtown" by Petula Clarke was one I heard alot as a very small child. My mom and dad had the album. Another that stands out is "Walk Away Renee" by Left Banke. A song still capable of generating a fair amount of emotion from the Peony. Thanks for the 45 Tangerine Pete :)
