just remembered...

The Groundhogs at the Cosmo Club, Chapeltown, Leeds 1985... n' again at Norwich Arts Centre about 1990ish. Fantastic live band, Tony MacPhee's guitar is just superb... Cherry Red live takes the skin off your face!!

Saw him again after his stroke playing with a local blues band in the Kings Head pub... n' he could still blow away many guitarists.

I saw the Groundhogs at the Marquee about the time of Crosscut Saw I think it was - very enjoyable from what I remember.

Does anyone have their cover of Subway Sect's 'Ambition'? It was a b-side on a 12"

Hi Gnomon,

Yeah it's on the B-side of the 12" of Never Understand. I'd copy it onto a CD for you but I haven't got a turntable at the moment, sorry :O(

JAMC also stopped in Toronto around 1987 or so (the Darklands tour whenever that was!) it was a night of sheer chaos.. they were using a drum machine thing that kept fucking up, and causing much aggrevation between band members and the William Reid guy took out a belligerent fan in the front with his mike stand... and was later sued for it. I'm not sure whatever happened about all that.
Great stuff!!

Think they played at the '80 Leeds show under the name of Y? and changed it to The Danse Society on the day...

Yeah I'll send you a copy of the J& MC's version of Ambition. Funny you mention that, as i had it out the weekend for one of me pal's who is a mad Subway Sect fan, he'd never heard it,and he nearly shit when the needle hit the record ;)
Think it's one of my fav' J&MC songs ever, though my pal is convinced it's only on there cos' Bobby Galespie was the drummer at the time, he thought it wasn't something the Reid brothers were likely to cover.

they were pretty good IIRC, *think* I already had Seduction. And even though I disliked The Cult, as their earlier incaranation SDC they were really good that night.
