Yes of course, we have contrary impulsions and behaviours sometimes, but there is a basic roadmap within us, isn't there, that causes us to favour those who are closest to us? It seems to run very deep and is inescapable - I catch myself hoping the Midlands team will beat the Yorkshire one in Come Dancing. Pitiful, and illogical, as they all ought to have their legs chopped off, but it's there, implanted.
