Warn't me that did the Avon valley research. I think we found a paper showing what the landscape was like at that time. Cores? No doubt the new route-lookers will find that too.

I do recall uphill was a swine, but still just do-able, until the local tug-o-war team helped the townie megalithomaniacs and the thing shot up the hill at a hell of a lick and straight off the rollers without an appreciable loss of speed! It taught me brute force is best.

Ah.... my bad on the understanding front. So many things I’ve forgotten. But thanks for the info. I certainly remember the rapidity with which the block shot up the hill, and the abrupt impromptu stop that we had to make to the whole exercise.

Peace (and thanks again)

The Heel Stone at Stonehenge, now thought not to have been raised up from the hollow beside it but brought from West Woods. @pittsmike
(former theory) and @davidjnash
(new theory) probably have thoughts on this.

Hi Nigel, you've probably already seen this link. Posting it here for its fascinating account of the history of the use of sarsens and the ingenious manner in which it was broken up and 'harvested'. Thankfully it all stopped when concrete started to be manufactured in the early part of the 20th century.

Thanks, June. I think some sarsens still go missing occasionally, and I seem to remember some of the gravel at Buck House is sarsen. Claims that Prince Andrew was responsible are purely speculative.
