Crickley Hill - Historic Dig Blog - 70's to 90's
Jan 25, 2019, 04:15
Whilst looking fer walks in the region I stumbled across this fascinating blog about the dig seasons at Crickley Hill from I guess the early 70's through the 80's and on. There's plenty to click on in terms of discoveries etc, but it was the social aspect and the characters involved, and the volumes of photos of those concerned that drew me in. Fascinating glimpse of a time before todays 'uber' professional digs. Gotta admit, it kinda makes me wish I was there, looked a blast. http://chreunion2009.blogspot.com/

That's a great blog, thanks for sharing. Went there on my New Year's Day walk this year, this adds another layer of interest.

There are also three very amateur (though decent equipment for the day) videos of the Crickley digs from the 80's up on Vimeo... https://vimeo.com/53436254.
It's no time team, but you get the idea.

I've walked the region several times, and know Crickley and Leckhampton well, but it's been years since I've been, and I managed to totally miss the Crippets long barrow on all occations. Methinks I'm due a re-visit. Do you know if that crazy Nuclear Defence Bunker on Greenway Lane is open to the public or not, would be great to have a mooch around that. Also, looks like there's a parking nightmare up on Crickley Hill Country Park, with loads of peeps getting fined £100 a time for some dubious reasons (like being scanned by the ANPR at the entrance, then the ticket machine not working).

Cool, these are my most-local sites. Went past Crippets on New Year's Day and was very sad to see new fencing between the bridleway and the edge of the wood. Looks like the previous tolerant attitude to access has come to an end.
