I was wondering if anyone has come across Rude Stone Monuments by James Fergusson first published in 1872. I was looking at a facsimile copy recently with a lovely old engraving of the Standing Stones of Stenness as the frontispiece. The facsimile is published by The Lost Library (based in Glastonbury) as Old Stone Monuments. Does anyone have a view on its value as a reference book. http://www.archive.org/details/rudestonemonumen00ferg

Your post will prompt me to do that though. I did have skim on the bus back to St Ives at the time, it has some lovely pics in it (I have a feeling someone - Chance? - may have posted some of them on here).

I was looking at it in a London bookshop a few weeks back but opted to buy The Green Roads of England. The friend I was with did purchase the Old Stone Monuments so I can borrow it at some point - need to decide whether I should get hold of my own copy (as am trying to reign book purchases in at present).

I know what you mean, but it's entirely futile in my case. "The Prehistoric Peak" arrived yesterday...
