are there any scale drawings of ancient sites available ? Not just sketches, but technical drafts showing relative positions, heights etc. Either online or in print.

The best place to get any technical style drawings of sites is your main reference library.

The books to go for are the archaeological journals and such that report excavation results, but searching through these is a nightmare. Here in Ireland there is the lovely library of the Society for the Antiquities of Ireland just 250m from where I work (I have it all sussed out), where for £2 a session you can go and pester the librarian. Try and find something similar close to you.

Obviously hitting google with the right key words often turns up titles of journals etc with reports in making it a lot easier to find when you go.

Hmm - Lucky bugger. I'm in Liverpool and right next to the local library. Unfortunately, local history is a big issue here, and nearly every available microfiche or vdu is usually busy and the attendant is kept on his toes. I'll try Google as i'll need to get a decent hard copy and the journals probably wont lend themselves to easy repro.

Preferably sites with a definite shape - Callanish, Stonehenge etc - or anything with an astronomical connection.

I've been trying to get a review copy out of Brum Uni for ages ... oh, hang on, the Quam has a contact there ...

have you tried the Java applets yet?

*the* book for archeao-astrom stuff is Clive Ruggles, Astronomy in Prehistoric Britain and Ireland :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0300078145/o/qid=1014128905/sr=8-1/ref=sr_aps_b_2_1/026-3315598-1178040

pricey, more statistics than diagrams, but very, very, VERY good ... if you're going to talk publically about astronomical purposes of ancient monuments, make sure you've read this, to stop looking an arse. It's *the* book

the intervisibility ones ... see which barrows are visible from other barrows ...

there's a movement one which walks you down the Cursus, showing what barrows are viewable as you go

amazing
