Yes. It's a fact that 1750 detectorists reported last year (about 17 finds each) and 600 members of the public. Next report may show a big rise (4000?) but...
some say most who reported in previous years have now given up reporting. Some say the anticipated rise is a "bounce" due to initial response to appointments of new FLOs in new areas and the figures will slump after no further new appointments are made since similar slumps have been noted. Then the finds.... a sudden catching up on a backlog can alter the figures. Or what if someone brings in their lifetime's collection in a huge sack (with or without the contextual information - is this a true rise, or a useful one?
Better to talk in broad figures. Is enough reported compared with what's found to justify the continuance of the hobby or PAS? If not, is the improvement fast, slow or doubtful? If it's other than fast then the "loss" is ongoing and large, and that matters.
