Your local circle?
Apr 23, 2005, 09:35
What's your nearest stone circle?

I live in Wolverhampton, and my nearest circle would be the Hoarstones, which is a good hour drive. In Shropshire. Perhaps 40 miles away. I would imagine most people have closer circles. . or do they?
Is this a silly question?
aah, I don't care. It's better than swastika arguments.

Hear Hear.
Anyway, I'm in Winchester so really my closest stone circle is Avebury, about 35 miles away. Plenty of IA forts, big ditches and you can't move for tumuli. No proper building stone here in Hants you see.
However, when they re-built the Norman church in Twyford (about 3 miles from here) in the 1870s, underneath the tower they found a circle of 12 "great sarsens". Unfortunately they re-buried them to be used as the foundations and there is nothing to see, I've checked, otherwise I would have posted it up. Pity.

Stanton Drew! A surprisingly little-known circle, considering its size. Oh, and Avebury's reasonably close as well :o)

Mine is the very little known Glassamucky Brakes stone circle here in COunty Dublin. 10 minutes drive on a Sunday morning or 5 hours during the week :-)

After that it would have to be Athgreany and Broadleas about half an hour away.

From North London, it seems my choices are The Rollrights (87 miles) or Avebury (100 miles).

Is there really nothing closer to the capital?!

The closest to North Glasgow must be at Cairnpapple,

http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/170

but that's a lot more than a stone circle.

Perhaps Greywether might find me one in my (metaphorical) backyard when he's sniffing about finding all these new rock markings at Whitehill and Achnacraig.
