William Stukeley's books
Aug 13, 2003, 18:13
I'm having trouble finding a bibliography for William Stukeley.
I was always under the impression that his 'Itinerarium Curiosum' was his great work on the stones, but I read on a site that -
"These claims (about Druids) he laid out in two books, Stonehenge, a Temple Restored to the British Druids, published in 1740, Abury, a Temple of the British Druids, published three years later in 1743."
Does anyone know how many books concerning megaliths he did write?

And have any been re-printed ever? I see there are several Itinerarium Curiosum copies available on Bookfinder.com, in America, prices range from $1,800 to $3,000. Surely there must be a reprint?

Hi Harv :-) ,

Garland published 'Stonehenge, a Temple Restored to the British Druids ; Abury, a Temple of the British Druids (Myth & Romanticism)' in 1984

also Gregg published; 'Itinerarium curiosum: or, An account of the antiquities, and remarkable curiosities in nature or art, observed in travels through Great Britain" but I don't know the dates.

You could try a book search thru a 2nd hand book store? Although they usually charge :-(

Catchy titles ;-)

But why not download an e-text version?

I've posted a link to an online version of his Stonehenge - A Temple Restor'd To The British Druids on the Stonehenge & its Environs page.

I've just finished reading it and I'd say its well worth a look, though you should understand that he's trying to prove that the pre-Christian people of Britain were good honest Christians, really, at least as Christian as you can be before Jesus! He's very imaginative, and his pictures are wonderful, always featuring little men with swords!

Pete G has a CD for sale with the Avebury book on it (not sure of the web address but I'm certain someone here can oblige), but I still can't afford it! : (
