Maybe it’s because we’ve been conditioned to walk on flat surfaces such as floors, pavements, road etc. Not the natural habitat of a foot. Cue Attenborough..
There’s a story about a Chinese emperor (..its always a Chinese emperor..!) about how he wanted his domain carpeted since it’s was all a tad tough on his old tootsies.
A bright spark invented sandals.
There’s one about not swatting a fly on a friends head with a hatchet too.

It was the WHO connection I though of particular interest with Panorama.

You know how places have “we will not tolerate any bullying or abusive behaviour towards our staff” signs..I think the time might be ripe in some cases, not all, for us to remind retail outlets that WE the customer will not tolerate it from them either. I’m sure everyone by now has experienced some ‘friction’ at some point when out. It’s all become rather dehumanising hasn’t it?
