From some of the reviews I have read, it seems that there are alot of people out there who dislike this album. I think that is very unfortunate. I, for one, believe this album to be a work of art. Every time I listen to it, I find something new to marvel at. The arrangements, the lyrics, the choruses, the production. I think this album is their best one since "Monster" and I'm really starting to think that it might be one of their best ever. I don't know if it's because I've heard all of their other albums way too many times (although I still love them all of course) or if it's because I just happen to feel that this album is their most adventurous. But I truly believe that they are getting better with age.
This album is very poetic & beautiful - lush, orchestral, innovative Pop music. And when I use the term "pop" I'm not talking about the drivel that passes for pop music these days. I'm talking about classic Pop music in the vein of The Beatles, The Beach Boys (it has a very "Pet Sounds" feel to it), XTC, The Zombies, etc. Pop music need not be mindless, disposable drivel. It can be adventurous, innovative, experimental - and yet still be catchy & commercial sounding. I think this album contains both. It is a work of art, yet also something to sing along to. I think the songs are just as catchy as anything I hear on the radio these days and alot more memorable. I think U2's last album was the same way. It totally baffles me why this album didn't sell as well as U2's. I think they were the best bands in the world 10-15 years ago & based on the music they are making these days, I think they are still just as good as they ever were.
When this album came out, I was going through a very painful & depressing divorce. It helped me to keep going when I wanted to give up. Good music has the ability to do that. I love "All the Way to Reno" (why this wasn't a Top 10 hit is beyond me) & "She Just Wants to Be" - they are both brilliant, beautiful songs, amongst many other wonderful creations here. I truly believe that this album & even their last one ("Up") will be re-discovered & re-evaluated someday. Music this good cannot be ignored or forgotten about.
Stipe, Buck & Mills really outdid themselves with this one. I am in awe of their level of creativity & imagination. I think they still have many years of great music within them. If only the public will take notice. Check this album out - it is a classic.
