OK, this is getting a bit silly now, about four weeks' worth. Not sure where the time has gone when I used to do these every week...
Richard Dawson & Circle – Henki. Oh, wow, this is pretty fantastic. Rotund urban folk troubadour meets Finnish heavy/psych rock overlords, and both sides come out with some of their best stuff. Hard to describe, kind of narrative space prog, but rest assured, you need to give this a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nly2TwK4tio
Garcia Peoples – Dodging Dues. Jam band via English folk rock return with a decent album, though not as jaw-droppingly good as the previous Nightcap At Wit’s End. But still worth a listen: https://garciapeoples.bandcamp.com/album/dodging-dues
AUA – The Damaged Organ. Hmmm, German duo do a krautrockier take on Broadcast et al. Wasn’t expecting to like it, but it’s actually pretty good (nothing online yet)
Pye Corner Audio – Entangled Routes. Latest from the ever reliable Martin Jenkins. As usual, there’s stand-out tracks at the start and end, and maybe a good ‘un in the middle, but that’s still a pretty good hit rate! https://soundcloud.com/ghost-box/sets/entangledroutes
Springtime – s/t. Trio of guys from various Aussie groups, I think. First track is AMAZING (think Nick Cave in his ‘Mercy Seat’ pomp), the next is ok, ok, ok, err, ok, then the last one is really good! Anyway, here’s that first track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C5zBzy4JuI
Stealing Sheep & The Radiophonic Workshop – La Planète Sauvage. DIY psych folkies meet the RW at a film festival in Jersey and record their collaboration, providing a new soundtrack to the film that we all used to happily refer to as Fantastic Planet (you know, the French cartoon with the big blue aliens). It’s perfectly nice, but it’s not the best work of either (and as the PR doesn’t make clear at all, it was actually recorded in 2014): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNwkEDszFA8
Maya Shenfeld – In Free Fall. Ooh, this is a bit of a treat for lovers of pure tone, modular electronics (as though I know what that is…). A lot of this type of stuff leaves me cold – this doesn’t: https://mayashenfeld.bandcamp.com/track/body-electric-4
Jonny Greenwood – Spencer OST. He’s done a lot of soundtracks now, hasn’t he? I haven’t heard most of them, so can’t judge, but this seems pretty accomplished to me, a mash-up of formal strings and smoky avant jazz…
Red Kite – Apophenian Bliss. Norwegian not-so-super group. OK in a thrash-meets-heavy-psych-noodling way, but you’ve heard it done better before
Resina – Speechless. Avant neo gothic orchestral noise or suchlike album, from Poland. I won’t be listening to it again.
Weeed – Do You Fall? Mellow stoner rock of a vaguely experimental bent. I fell asleep.
The Hardy Tree – Stagdale pt 2 EP. Clay Pipe lady, flexidisc soundtrack to her graphic novel, very nice
Large Plants – La Isla Bonita 7”. Bloke what was in Wolf People goes ‘eavy on Madonna song. Err, rather great
Clinic – Fantasy Island
Hedvig Mollestad – Tempest Revisited
Diagonal – 4 / Live In Leeds 2012
Octopus Ride – II
Nik Turner – I Do What I Like
Anika – Change
Liars – The Apple Drop
Jorja Chalmers – Midnight Train
Various Gaye Bykers On Acid and Crazyhead tracks – ahead of this ;-) https://thequietus.com/articles/30791-rich-deakin-grebo-the-loud-and-lousy-story-of-gaye-bykers-on-acid-and-crazyhead-interview
The League Of Gentlemen – Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx. If you’re a Fripp fan, and you haven’t heard this, then you really should: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DevXeXJl4_k
Can – Live In Brighton 1975. Having never played an instrument with other people, I have no idea, but… doesn’t all this improvisation get really tiring after a while? I wonder if members of Can secretly yearned to play a straight, “this one’s from our new album” set, and then off after an hour??
Peter Hammill – Fool’s Mate / The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage / In Camera / Nadir’s Big Chance. Hammill jag. Silent Corner never ceases to blow me away, and a couple of seriously rockin’ tunes on Nadir.
Mecki Mark Men – Running In The Summer Night
