More great new music from 2018…

Concretism – For Concrete And Country. Lots of excellent EPs over the past few years, but this is the first ‘proper’ album from Concretism. He might not be pushing too many envelopes here, but this is top notch retro futurist radiophonica, like a more strident Advisory Circle: https://concretism-cis.bandcamp.com/album/for-concrete-and-country

Vive La Void – s/t. I find myself with no particularly strong feelings about Moon Duo, but this solo album from Sanae Yamada, the female half of the band, is actually rather cracking, expansively chilly and metronomic synthscapes that engulf the senses: https://vivelavoid.bandcamp.com/

Pelagos – Revolve. Lush techno-prog from ex-members of Circle, which like the mother group, sounds like it’s doing something quite simple when it’s actually delivering something layered and complex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enzVo_TMKBw&feature=youtu.be

The Left Outsides – All That Remains. Some great folk rock here from husband and wife duo which refreshingly doesn’t pretend to be channelling the spirits of ancient Albion. Great track: https://theleftoutsides.bandcamp.com/track/the-unbroken-circle

Nest Egg – Nothingness Is Not A Curse. There must be hundreds of bands doing this kind of motorik kraut-psych these days, but very few of them are doing it as well as this, like a rockier Follakzoid: https://fuzzclub.bandcamp.com/album/nothingness-is-not-a-curse

Medistation – EP. Superior JAMC/BRMC style garage rock from Sweden: https://fuzzclub.bandcamp.com/album/medistation

The Advisory Circle – Ways Of Seeing

Christina Vantzou – No. 4

The National Jazz Trio Of Scotland – Standards Vol. IV

Anna Van Hausswolff – Dead Magic

Cavern Of Anti-Matter – Hormone Lemonade

Squadra Omega – Materia Oscura. From last year, great album of cosmic/avant/Canterbury prog from mysterious Italian crew: https://soave.bandcamp.com/album/materia-oscura

The 4th Movement – s/t. Having failed to get anywhere as Death, Detroit’s premier/only black proto-punk power trio, the Hackney brothers reconvened as The 4th Movement and released this Christian rock album – and it’s really good! Getting a re-release on Drag City… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiKR8tSZOE0

Jim O’Rourke – Insignificance. Listening to the new Ryley Walker album inevitably leads me back to JOR, must check out more of his non-avant stuff if it’s as good as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahWetlj4F7g

The Zodiac – Cosmic Sounds
