Something that I love that Leadbelly and Roscoe have in common is that incredible syncopation, along with unquestionably authentic personalities and lives backing up their music. When these guys talk about hard times, they're recounting from their own experience. They're both survivors of hard work and products of a certain time and place...
The North won the U.S. Civil War, but the South had all the good music.
