Not being as pre-emptively cool as The Drude, my first exposure to Tangerine Dream was via these early Virgin epics. I didn't get to hear 'Alpha Centauri', 'Zeit' or 'Atem' until their 1976 Virgin releases (I wonder why Virgin never issued 'Electronic Meditation' as well?) by which time I was well under the spell of the sequencers of 'Phaedra', 'Rubycon' and 'Ricochet'. To my ears, then and now, the Virgin albums are the ones I reach for first when I fancy a slice of prime Tangs, much as I love those earlier Ohr-originated records. Comparatively accessible they may be, but 'Phaedra' and 'Rubycon' are still far out records, make no mistake. And there'd have been no Jean Michel Jarre or Donna Summer/Georgio Moroder chart entries without their influence. As regards 'Cyclone', it contains my all-time favourite Tangerine Dream track in 'Bent Cold Sidewalk' which, uniquely in the Tangs' 1970's oeuvre, is a SONG. It's a progtastic trip of the highest order and I adore it. The Shakespearean vocalising towards the end of the central sequenced section sets the hairs on the nape of my neck on edge every time I hear it. Awesome.

IanB wrote: Fantastic records. The newish Fripp live album is well worthy of that company. Do you mean "Love Cannot Bear"? I just got that on Saturday - very nice. I particularly like it when he brings in the old-style Fripp sustaino-guitar, as I find the string sounds get a bit muzak-y after a while...nonetheless, a very lovely listen.

No I haven't got "Love Cannot Bear" (that's another one for the Discipline shopping list) I actually meant "At The End Of Time - Churchscapes in England & Estonia"

Ah OK, I don't know that one. Is it all Soundscape stuff - orchestral sounds etc, or does Fripp play some more conventional guitar over the top of it? Have you seen this, btw? http://guitargeek.com/rigview/396/ That's one seriously expensive set up!

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. This Churchscapes thing is from the same universe as Blessing Of Tears. I guess it depends what you mean by conventional but there are some melodic flourishes as well as the never-ending-guitar-synth-pad thing. On one track he sounds very much like Bill Nelson though that may just be a case of RF returning the influence.
