Zenbaby Enjoyed your "Here Come The Warm Jets" review. I agree with you on almost every point: A truly fantastic album from a fantastic year in music, but it is in only the most friendly way possible I must voice the following corrections regarding personnel: Phil Collins, Morris Pert & John Cale did not appear on "Jets". I'm sure you transposed Collins' appearances on "Taking Tiger Mountain", "Another Green World", "Before And After Science" and "Music For Films", Cale also appearing on most of these albums as well. And as for Morris Pert, he isn't on "Jets", either, but probably lurks somewhere on "Before And After Science", or something. Regarding the incredible, extended guitar solo on "Baby's On Fire", I realise Fripp is credited with guitar on that track--but so is Paul Rudolph. And it was that ex-Pink Fairies' guitarist who contributed that shredding solo (Fripp's guitar relegated to that low, lurching noise that runs throughout it). The Eno/Rudolph connection was forged during sessions for Robert Calvert's "Captain Lockheed" album, so no surprise as to Simon King's presence on the title track alongside Rudolph. Wouldn't mention it if Rudolph wasn't so criminally underrated. Looking forward to your next review, man

I'm still reeling from your revelation, Mr Seth, that it was Paul Rudolph spraying that burning solo in the middle of BoF and NOT Bobby Fripp! (OK so it took over 3 years to find your posting...). In the pantheon of fab geetar solos, this is one of my favourites ever and for 25 years or more I believed it came from the fingers of RF. It makes perfect sense now that I know the truth. The style is all wrong for Fripp, but that just added to the genius of the darned thing and made it all the more remarkable - I loved his usual sustained fuzztone stuff, but this chameleon-like change of style just confirmed the brilliance of the diminutive Dorset guru, didn't it? Ashamed to say it, but apart from his bass-playing contributions to Hawkwind, I've completely overlooked Mr Rudolph. Can anyone point me to his best stuff, Pink Fairies or otherwise? I need to make amends lest I be struck down by the Gods of Rock for my for foolishness.....

Hey, Red Lead - For the absolute apex of Paul Rudolph's lead guitar work, your best bet is to check out the Twink solo album, "Think Pink" and the first Pink Fairies album, "Never Never Land"...they are also both fantastic records in their own right If these do it for you, then by all means go for the live Fairies compilation, "Mandies and Mescaline Round Uncle Harry's" has a stunning version of "The Snake" from the BBC, 1970 where Rudolph really just drives it over the top There is also a wicked version of "Walk Don't Run" on the second Fairies, "Walk Don't Run" as well as an overall change in Rudolph's direction as he started to incorporate Leslie amplifiers in his playing...(you can also hear him play uncredited session guitar on a track or two in this style on the first Sparks album) I swear, the man's a fucking genius

Seth, Once again you've floored all who care with your revelations...... I'd never have guessed it was anyone other than Fripp either- probably due to the fact that he usually does do the Guitar solo on more or less any track he guests on, especially Eno's later albums. Plus the fact that there was the Fripp & Eno tandem. I heard the Fairies 'Never Never Land' as a teenager in the early 70s as my local library had it- hip or what !? Time to rediscover I think cheers ~ JT

J-Tones, Shucks, man--it all came to me after listening to "Captain Lockheed & The Starfighters" by Robert Calvert and "Doremi Fasol Latido" by Hawkwind, listening to just the Rudolph and King parts Then I played just the tracks Rudolph and King contributed to on Eno's "Here Come The Warm Jets" and it came like a flash that it was Rudolph who was responsible for the guitar solo on "Baby's On Fire", especially since his playing had been roosting in my head especially strong for the past several years Taking into account exceptions like the mournful solo just preceding "Big Top" on "Lizard", the solo on "21st Century Schizoid Man" (esp. the veersion on "The Night Watch" from Amsterdam) and "(No Pussyfooting)", overall Fripp's soloing generally doesn't go on at such great length -- and even less so in session situations (Think back to all those Eno, Bowie, Gabriel and Roches albums, y'know?) Unprompted, Rudolph confirmed it for me during a telephone interview in 1998 For me, Paul "Blackie" Rudolph is up there with Davie Allan and Doggen as one of the more astonishingly natural players in Rock -- such GUTZ and such uncanny knack for making tone pure emotion, it blows me away every time without fail Your LIBRARY had "Never Never Land"?!! Now THAT'S truly fucked up, man hahahahahahahaha...brilliant

You get some shockingly hip people working in libraries occasionally. My older brother (who was a head along time before me) swears that Southport record library had both "An Electric Storm" by the White Noise and Van Dyke Parks' "Song Cycle" in the early 70s as well.
