dead on the web
May 08, 2003, 11:32
As some of you propably know, the Other Ones (erstwhile Grateful Dead) decided to change their name half way back to THE DEAD after a brilliant two-day concert last year. This is followed by a summer tour - US only, shame!- feat. a few gigs with Bob himself (father of Jakob Dylan).
UK is graced by shootoff RATDOG (Bob Weir's Band, playing lotsa Dead stuff...) at Canterbury Festival in August (http://www.canterburyfayre.com)

After listening to the Alpine Valley Gigs last year and the reunion concert this February at SF's Warfield Theatre I am quite surprised how energetic & vibrant their music is again...
(Suffered through their - not quite bad, but somehow dissapointing - European Shows 1990)
Also very recommendable: Bassist Phil Lesh & Friend's Summer Tour of 01 - lotsa improvisational stuff, brilliant renditions of Dead tunes, a few extraordinary covers (I Am The Walrus, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Lucy in the Sky...)

What's best: It's all freely available on www.! Ace stuff, mostly directly transferred from the Mixing Desk Masters. Bless them for their liberal view towards taping & trading!

(lots of live recordings from 66 on...)

most of the stuff takes a while to download, especially the shn files (you'll need a little freeware tool to read them - have a look over here:

listen & enjoy!
